Itinerary

  1. 1

    Old Town

    10 min

Walk through the Schipfe, one of Zurich’s oldest neighbourhoods. Between the River Limmat, narrow lanes and historic houses, discover how craftsmen and boatmen shaped everyday life in the medieval city.

  2. 2

    Lindenhof Hill

    15 min

At Lindenhof, discover Zurich’s Celtic and Roman origins. A Roman fort and customs station once stood here, followed later by medieval palatial buildings. Enjoy sweeping views over the River Limmat and Zurich’s Old Town.

  3. 3

    Stop 3

    10 min

See the remains of a Roman bathhouse. Thermengasse offers a vivid glimpse into how the inhabitants of ancient Turicum lived almost 2,000 years ago.

  4. 4

    Rathausbrucke

    5 min

On Rathausbrücke, experience Zurich’s historic centre along the River Limmat. Learn more about Zurich’s Town Hall and the development of the medieval marketplace between the two sides of the Old Town.

  5. 5

    Stop 5

    10 min

Visit Zurich’s oldest parish church, provided it is open. Learn about its famous 8.64-metre clock face, the former fire watch and the unusual ownership history of the church and its tower.

  6. 6

    Fraumunster Church

    20 minAdmission included

Inside the Fraumünster, discover the history of the abbey founded in 853, its last abbess, Katharina von Zimmern, and Marc Chagall’s famous cycle of stained-glass windows. Bruno is an accredited Fraumünster guide.

  7. 7

    Hans Waldmann Statue

    5 min

At the equestrian statue, hear the story of Hans Waldmann: a successful military commander, Mayor of Zurich and, ultimately, a powerful political figure who was overthrown. His fate reflects the conflicts and power struggles of late medieval Zurich.

  8. 8

    Stop 8

    15 min

Visit the Wasserkirche, provided it is open. Here, the legend of Zurich’s patron saints, Felix and Regula, is intertwined with the Reformation, the city’s first public library and the history of Zurich along the River Limmat.

  9. 9

    Grossmunster

    15 min

Inside the Grossmünster, you stand at one of the key sites of the Zurich Reformation. Learn how Huldrych Zwingli’s preaching transformed the city and made Zurich a major European centre of religious and political change.

Historical city tour with real depth

A very interesting and personal tour through Zurich. I particularly liked that the usual sights were not just checked off, but many historical connections and stories were explained that you would hardly learn on a normal city walk. Bruno obviously knows Zurich very well and talks with great enthusiasm about the old town, the Reformation, and the development of the city. At the same time, there remained enough room for questions and spontaneous topics. Anyone who wants to not just see Zurich, but really learn something about the city and its history, is in exactly the right place here.
