Lo stupore del lontanissimo passato
Dignes les bains è una cittadina deliziosa, un po' a Nord dei campi di lavanda e sotto le Alpi francesi. A circa 600 metri di altezza ha un clima invidiabile e piscine termali. è deliziosa, calma, profumata di lavanda, con i ritmi della provincia francese. Poco fuori la cittadina greggi da pecore e qualche mandria di mucche molto socievoli. vi si producono formaggi molto buoni (più a nord si possono trovare anche formaggi di capra). Si mangia molto bene, con una cucina abbastanza simile a quella italiana (del resto moltissimi residenti sono di origine italiana). Veramente deliziosa. Ma il pezzo forte sono le "Dalles aux ammonitese" una enorme lastra di ammonite di 300 mq, quasi in verticale, con una enorme quantità di fossili (ammoniti) risalenti a 200 milioni di anni fa. Sono enormi! Alcuni hanno il diametro di 70 cm e sembrano una grossissima chiocciola. La parete si è formata all'epoca, poi gli strati si sono solidificati e corrugati, a causa della spinta della piattaforma continentale africana. Stupefacente!
