You start your tour with the one hour lake boat transfer from Luzern to Alpnachstad. After leaving the bay of Luzern, the boat glides along the shore of Hergiswil and Stansstad to the bay of Alpnach. On the entire boat tour you have the surrounding mountains in sight.

Alpnachstad is the connection point between the lake boat and the steepest cogwheel train in the world. Within 35 minutes the cogwheel train climbs along the ridge and passing alpine meadows to Pilatus Kulm.

Arrive at the mountain station Pilatus Kulm of the Pilatusbahn, where a viewing terrace, a panorama gallery and two mountain hotels are located on the scenic local mountain. In terms of population, Kriens is the third largest municipality and the second largest city in the Swiss canton of Lucerne. It lies at the foot of Mount Pilatus and borders Lucerne to the east. At Kriens you leave the aerial cableway and after a 10 minutes walk to the bus stop, you board the local bus to Luzern.

An unforgettable day on the Golden Round Trip, perfect for a mother-daughter adventure
My mother and I went on the Mt. Pilatus Golden Round Trip tour with our wonderful guide, Emil, and it turned out to be one of the highlights of our time in Switzerland. We started with a boat ride across Lake Lucerne, and the scenery was so picturesque it almost didn't look real. Next came the cogwheel train up Mt. Pilatus, the steepest in the world. I'd never experienced anything like it, and climbing at a gradient of nearly 48% was a thrill from start to finish. At the top, the views from the lookout points were breathtaking. A cloud mist hid some of the scenery while we were up there, but it was still absolutely worth it. On the way down we took the gondola with a stop at Fräkmüntegg, and once we dropped below the clouds the views opened up beautifully: vibrant greens and blues across the lake and mountainside, like something out of a fantasy. From Kriens, a quick local bus brought us back to Lucerne. Emil was a great guide. His explanations were informative, and he also gave us space to simply enjoy the day together without constant commentary. My mom would have loved a bit more conversation with him, but I really appreciated the quiet moments that let me take in the views. At the end, Emil kindly offered to share more tips about Lucerne and invited us to reach out to him. Our schedule was too tight to take him up on it, but it was a thoughtful gesture. Highly recommend this tour! One tip: if you can, build some flexibility into your booking dates so you can move the trip around the weather. Clear skies at the summit would make an already amazing day even better.

Pilatus view
It was amazing specially we ended up with a private tour guide Rui? Thecrather did not help in the morning, but coming down it was clear. We up for the train round trip which I found it was a big difference in price and totally over priced.

We met our tour guide,...
We met our tour guide, Ueli, at the train station and spent the next few hours, enjoying the magnificent views of Lake Lucerne via a boat and later on the cog train that takes you up to Mt Pilatus. We did have to depart a little early on the cable car as there was a potential for bad weather later in the afternoon. Our tour guide did a fantastic job of explaining the history of the area and sharing numerous personal stories of life there in Switzerland. We had a fantastic time and would love to do more tours next time with Ueli.

It was a very varied tour...
It was a very varied tour with a Swiss guide. He took us to the boat, had a reservation for the cog railway, and answered all my questions. The journey is impressive, and it's a great way to pass the time on the mountain. On the return trip, we took the gondola back, and the view is incredible. Highly recommended.

extraordinary round tour
It was a well organized tour with a nice guide. Got by boat to the train where we had reserved seats. Got free time at the mountain so we could explore for us and had a great lunch at the restaurant. Tourguide travelled with us another way back to Luzern which was great. Absolutely fullfilled what it stands for. And as we travellled just with 2 others, it was not a typical group tour.

Excursion with friendly couple
All in all a great thing! The Swiss countryside fantastic. The only downer is the funicular from Alpnach. We barely got off the ship and entered a crowd of tourists. A mess of no good - the helpers of the railway completely overwhelmed. We had tickets with reservations but were still in the crowd. Clear labelling for passengers with reservations and access to the turnstile is urgently needed. It is a mystery to me that such a place with such large numbers of tourists offers such a amateur and helpless organization.
